Passive income side hustle: the conditions that switch the money off, laid out as a timeline from the official help pages

The schedule on one page

  • The ad and app income sold as a passive income side hustle has written cut-off dates once you stop working on it
  • Naver AdPost cuts at 2 months without a valid click, AdSense at 4, 5 and 6 months without ads, YouTube at 6 months without an upload, Google Play at 1 year
  • Invalid traffic, reused content and fake clicks stop the money with no date at all, and what is left is paid only under threshold, hold and refund rules

Search YouTube for passive income side hustle and the top titles promise money that arrives every month after one setup. They talk about the money coming in. None of them says when it stops.

This post pulls only the stop conditions and their timing from the help pages and operating policies of YouTube, AdSense, Google Play and Naver AdPost, Korea's blog ad network, and lines them up in time order. Coupang Partners, Korea's main affiliate program, is left out because its policy pages do not open at a public address. The documents were checked on 27 October 2026.

1.Which stretch the word passive actually covers

Whether it is ad or app income, passive describes the stretch where money accumulates. Posts are up and ads attach to them, an app is listed and installs happen.

The documents look at the other side of that stretch. They count the period with no activity after the owner walks away, and once a line is crossed they switch off the ads or the account.

Inactive: a set period with none of the activity the platform counts, such as impressions, clicks, uploads or sign-ins.

The schedule below assumes you stop on 1 January (an assumption) and adds the periods from each document as written. No dollar amounts appear anywhere. The stop dates are the same whatever the balance.

2.Counting from the day you stop: what switches off, and when

Month two, 1 March: Naver AdPost, zero valid clicks

Naver AdPost's operating policy lists a medium whose value as an ad placement has fallen as a ground for restriction. The list includes a medium with no valid click at all for two months, and content that is not updated or managed so that its value has fallen sharply (AdPost operating policy, in Korean).

Once restricted, the medium is put into a no-serving state and ads stop on every post. The restriction is lifted only 30 days after it was imposed.

Of the four platforms, the earliest line comes at two months. A member who turned the ads off themselves is excluded from this ground.

Months four and five, 1 May and 1 June: AdSense site and account

AdSense counts sites and accounts separately. If a site has not shown any ads for at least four months it is considered inactive, a notification appears, and there is one month to start showing ads again. A site inactive for over five months needs to be reviewed again (Your site is inactive).

The account is counted in impressions.

After five months with no ad impressions, an email says the account will be deactivated unless it generates impressions in the next 30 days (Your AdSense account was deactivated for being inactive).

Month six, 1 July: AdSense deactivation and YouTube monetization off

The same page says AdSense accounts are deactivated if they have not generated any ad impressions for six months. That is the day the 30 days in the email run out.

YouTube's line falls in the same month. YouTube may turn off monetization on channels that have not uploaded a video or posted to the Posts tab for six months or more (YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility).

Month twelve, 1 January next year: Google Play developer account marked for closure

Google Play separates accounts with apps from accounts without. An account without apps is marked for closure when it was created more than a year ago and has never submitted an app for review (Closure of inactive developer accounts).

For an account with apps the page lists four things together: created more than a year ago, less than 1,000 combined lifetime installs across all published apps, phone number and contact email not verified, and no Play Console use in the last 180 days.

Reminder emails go out with 60, 30 and 7 days notice. If the steps in the email are not taken, the account is closed and the registration fee is not refunded.

Year seven: the day an AdSense account cannot be brought back

A deactivated AdSense account can be reactivated, but not forever. After seven years, the same page says, you can no longer access or reactivate the account. Until then the finalized earnings can still be reached by reactivating or closing it.

3.Conditions that stop the money with no date attached

A separate set of conditions depends on what was automated, and it applies regardless of the calendar.

  • Invalid traffic: AdSense names publishers clicking their own live ads and automated clicking tools or robots as examples, and may suspend or close an account with high levels of it (Invalid traffic)
  • Ad serving limits: while traffic quality is assessed, ad serving is limited, typically for less than 30 days but sometimes longer (Ad serving limits)
  • Reused content: YouTube's reused content policy applies to the channel as a whole, and monetization may be removed from the entire channel (YouTube channel monetization policies)
  • Bot views: Shorts views from automated click or scroll bots, and non-original Shorts, do not count toward revenue sharing (YouTube Shorts monetization policies)
  • Invalid clicks: AdPost treats clicks made by robots or automated click and impression tools as invalid and lists them as a restriction ground
A restricted AdPost medium shows default non-paying ads. Clicks on them earn nothing, so visible ads are not income.

None of the four documents has a sentence banning tools that post text or video automatically. What they ban is manufacturing clicks and views, and uploading other people's work with next to no change.

The stop date is counted from the last day of activity, not from the balance.

4.The conditions for paying out what is left

Stopping does not erase what has already accumulated. It does attach conditions to getting it.

AdSense pays between the 21st and the 26th of the month only if the total balance on the 20th has reached the payment threshold. Google may withhold payment when it finds a violation of the terms or program policies, and until any outstanding Google Ads balance is paid (Payment timelines for AdSense).

When an account is closed, a 30-day payment hold is put in place to calculate the final payment. Deductions for invalid traffic and policy violations are refunded to the affected advertisers where appropriate and possible (AdSense account closed for policy reasons).

Finalized earnings on a deactivated account can only be reached by reactivating or closing it.

To be paid on closing, the balance must be greater than the cancellation threshold, personal information must be verified, there must be no payment holds and no open AdMob account, and the final payment arrives within approximately 90 days of the end of the month (Close your AdSense account). A balance below the threshold is not paid.

Only the conditions that stop or delay a payout, taken from the four documents. The threshold amount depends on account settings.

Individual AdPost members receive income through the end of the previous month in their bank account on the 25th, or the previous business day if that is a weekend or holiday (AdPost help, in Korean).

Article 15 of the AdPost terms adds that payment may be restricted while a member is under restriction or their business is suspended or closed, that improper income can be refused or recovered and refunded to advertisers, and that payment is held during an investigation until it is confirmed (AdPost terms, in Korean).

How long each platform takes from a first sale to a first payout is in passive income payout schedule, and which kinds of income have a published yield is in passive income pipeline.

5.Three lines

Three-line summary

  • After you stop, the lines are AdPost at 2 months, AdSense at 4, 5 and 6 months, YouTube at 6 months and Google Play at 1 year, all written in the documents
  • Manufacturing clicks or views and reposting other people's content stop the whole account regardless of the date
  • What is left is paid only above the threshold and with no hold, and deducted amounts go back to advertisers
