Online casino maintenance mid-round, a 6-point checklist for the bet, balance, history and withdrawal

Chips are down, the cards are coming out, and a maintenance notice fills the screen. Where is that money right now?

Nobody playing gets to choose when an online casino goes into maintenance. That is why it helps to know in advance what is already settled for that moment.

The answers here come from three documents: GLI-19 version 3.0 from Gaming Laboratories International (GLI), which tests online gaming systems, Evolution's baccarat rules, and the UK Gambling Commission's RTS 10.

1.In the documents, maintenance makes an 'interrupted game'

Interrupted game: a round whose outcome is still unresolved, or whose outcome could not be properly shown to the player.

Section 4.16.1 of GLI-19 lists five causes. Alongside loss of communications, a player device restart or malfunction, and the player's software closing abnormally, it names a platform restart and a game-disable command from the platform (GLI-19 v3.0).

Site maintenance usually falls under those last two: restarting the server or taking a game offline.

2.Six checks when maintenance hits mid-round

One: the round finishes before the game goes down

GLI-19 section 4.15.1 says that when the platform disables a game in progress, every player in that game must be allowed to conclude the current round. That happens right away, or the next time the game becomes available.

Only once the round has fully concluded does the game stop being accessible.

Two: held money must show in the balance

If the round can continue, its wagers are held by the platform until it completes (4.16.2). The same section says the player account must reflect those held funds.

While the balance looks lower, that money has not been settled yet.

Three: in baccarat there is nothing left to choose

After betting closes, a baccarat player has no further input on the result. GLI-19 4.16.3(a) allows a round that needs no player input to go to a completion state, provided the game history and balance reflect a completed game.

UK RTS 10 guidance points the same way. If the interruption comes after the bet is accepted and the customer can no longer affect the outcome, the result stands (UK RTS 10). If it stops before an outcome is generated, the deducted stake goes back to the balance.

Four: if it cannot continue, everything comes back

GLI-19 appendix A.6.4 gives the operator four duties when a system action means a round cannot continue. Return all wagers, update balances and game history, inform the regulator, and disable the game if the same failure is likely to hit it again.

Evolution's baccarat rules say a malfunction voids the round and all payouts, and bets are returned (Evolution baccarat rules). For an error, the round is paused and players are told by chat or an on-screen pop-up; if it cannot be fixed at once, the round is cancelled and initial bets are refunded to everyone in it.

After maintenance, the round has either closed on its result or been cancelled and refunded. Those are the two things to check.

Five: other players at the table settle separately

GLI-19 4.16.3(c) says one player failing to complete a round must not affect how other players in the same session are credited or debited. RTS 10 asks for games with several participants to be handled fairly, case by case.

Six: the records must be there

RTS 10B requires systems that can void and refund a bet and keep enough to restore the event, including card decks, dealt hands and who staked what on which outcome. GLI-19 A.6.3 asks for an audit log entry with the date, time and reason each time a game is disabled.

3.If withdrawals stop "for maintenance"

On Korean YouTube, a search for baccarat site maintenance brings up a video on withdrawal-refusal excuses near the top.

GLI-19 says the terms must state timeframes and limits for deposits and withdrawals. They must also state the operator's right to refuse withdrawals for good and sufficient reason.

A withdrawal request must be completed within a reasonable time unless there is a pending unresolved complaint, dispute or investigation (A.3.6(e)). Any such investigation has to be documented and available to the regulator.

If maintenance drags on, find the withdrawal timeframe in the terms first, and once it has passed, write in with the notice time and the request time. The steps from request to receipt are in baccarat site withdrawal.

4.Where these standards apply

GLI-19 is a testing lab's standard, and the regulator responsible for a site decides which sections apply. RTS 10 binds UK licensees. For a site under another licence, read the interruption section of its terms directly.

RTS 10C requires operators to make their interruption policies available, and GLI-19 4.18.2 asks for live game interruption procedures to be shown to players.

5.When the notice appears, in this order
