Realistic side hustles in Korea, how the weekly hours on a weekend part-time job decide holiday pay and social insurance

Nine on a Saturday morning, before a neighborhood bakery opens, the weekend schedule is pinned to the wall. Say it reads seven hours on Saturday and seven on Sunday, 14 hours a week (an assumption).

Search for realistic side hustles and the top posts list online work such as e-books, blogs and reward apps. Yet Korean autocomplete also offers phrases about social insurance for weekend part-time jobs and about holiday pay at 15 hours.

A part-time job sells hours, and the law attaches the moment those hours are set. This post takes two numbers, 15 hours a week and 60 hours a month, and answers questions about them case by case. The source is the original text of Korean law on the National Law Information Center.

1.Does working only two weekend days make someone a worker?

Article 2 of the Labor Standards Act defines a worker as a person who provides work for wages, whatever the type of job. Someone whose contractual hours per week are shorter than those of a regular worker doing the same job is a part-time worker (item 9 of the same article).

Having a main employer elsewhere changes nothing. At the weekend shop, that person is the shop's part-time worker.

Short hours do not remove the written employment contract. Article 17 requires the employer to hand over a document stating the wage items and how they are calculated and paid, contractual hours, holidays and paid annual leave.

The minimum wage also applies whatever the hours. In 2026 it is 10,320 won an hour (Ministry of Employment and Labor).

2.What differs between 14 and 16 hours a week?

The fork is Article 18(3) of the Labor Standards Act. Articles 55 and 60 do not apply to a worker whose contractual hours, averaged over four weeks, are under 15 a week.

Contractual hours: hours agreed in advance within legal limits (Article 2(1) item 8).

Article 55(1) requires at least one paid holiday a week on average. Article 60 covers paid annual leave. What people call weekly holiday pay comes from that paid holiday.

Hourly wage of 10,320 won times weekly hours only. No weekly holiday pay, and the hours are assumed.
▲ Hourly wage of 10,320 won times weekly hours only. No weekly holiday pay, and the hours are assumed.

Base pay for 14 and for 16 hours differs by 20,640 won a week.

The money gap is small. The 16-hour side, though, picks up both the paid holiday article and the annual leave article, and those two carry on for every week the contract stays above the line.

The 15-hour line decides, by an hour or two, whether two holiday and leave articles apply. So on getting a schedule, the first number to read is the weekly hours written in the contract.

The test uses a four-week average.

Say the shop has someone alternate 16, 13, 16 and 13 hours (an assumption). The four weeks add up to 58 hours, an average of 14.5, which falls under 15. Two weeks at 16 hours do not change that.

Someone who works less than four weeks is judged on the average for that period.

Leave for a part-time worker above 15 hours is not counted exactly as for a regular worker. Article 18(1) says working conditions are set in proportion to the hours of a regular worker doing the same job.

The base is Article 60: 15 days after a year with at least 80% attendance (paragraph 1), and in the first year 1 day per month of full attendance (paragraph 2), with the hour ratio applied for part-time workers.

Actual holiday pay and leave amounts are not calculated here. Check with the labor ministry helpline.

Article 18(2) leaves the detailed standards to a presidential decree, so the amount depends on that decree and on the shop's regular hours. The ministry's helpline is the place to ask when a workplace's own situation matters.

3.Does a weekend job on top of a day job come with social insurance?

Here the line is 60 hours a month.

  • Employment insurance: excluded under 60 hours a month or under 15 hours a week, but covered after 3 months of continuous work or for daily workers (Employment Insurance Act Enforcement Decree, Article 3)
  • National pension: part-time workers under 60 contractual hours a month are not counted as workers, except in cases such as 3 months of continuous work with the employer's consent and the worker's request (National Pension Act Enforcement Decree, Article 2 item 4)
  • Health insurance: part-time workers under 60 contractual hours a month are not workplace subscribers (National Health Insurance Act Enforcement Decree, Article 9 item 1)

Coverage is judged on the hours at the weekend shop, separately from the main employer. For the national pension, the decree also lets someone whose hours across two or more workplaces add up to 60 or more join at a workplace under 60, on request.

Employment insurance is set to change. Article 10 of the Employment Insurance Act, amended on March 17, 2026 and in force from January 1, 2028, will exclude workers paid below an income threshold instead of using hours, and will let pay from two or more jobs be combined on application. The amount is set by presidential decree.

4.If someone gets hurt at a short weekend job, is there compensation?

Article 6 of the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act says the Act applies to every business that employs workers. Only businesses set by presidential decree, considering risk, size and location, are left out.

Before the first shift, check the weekly hours and holiday lines in the contract.
▲ Before the first shift, check the weekly hours and holiday lines in the contract.

The accident insurance article has no hour line like 15 or 60. A worker with short hours is still inside its protection.

The main employer's rules on side jobs are a separate matter. The sentences to look for in the work rules are in the side hustle after work schedule.

Three-line summary

  • A weekend part-timer is a worker, and the written contract and the 10,320 won minimum wage apply whatever the hours
  • Under 15 hours a week on a four-week average, the paid holiday and annual leave articles drop out (Labor Standards Act, Article 18(3))
  • Under 60 hours a month, employment insurance, the pension and workplace health insurance generally drop out, and accident insurance has no hour line
