Stare at a big road long enough and shapes start to jump out. Five Bankers means a turn is coming, four chops in a row means one more. We checked whether this kind of baccarat pattern recognition actually tells you the next hand, using 12,686 clean shoes collected from Evolution live baccarat at the Stake (stake.com) casino.
We dropped the first two hands of each shoe, where records can be shaky, and removed ties. Every hand was sorted by the Player/Banker shape of the five hands before it, 32 shapes in all, and we recorded what came next. Each shape showed up about 21,000 times on average, enough that luck alone cannot move the numbers much.
32 patterns, Banker on the next hand Lowest pattern 49.95% Highest pattern 51.61% Overall average 50.63% Far from average 3 of 32 (luck alone gives 1 or 2)
Even the best pattern sits only about one point above average, and the 5% Banker commission eats that. The three patterns that stray far from average are about as many as chance would produce, and if you split the period in two, the ranking changes.
Human eyes are built to find order in noise. A shoe has more than 30 runs, so a convincing shape turns up in every shoe. That makes the road useful as a record: how this shoe has gone, and when you want to stop. As a tool for calling the next hand it disappoints. How to tell a record tool from a prediction tool is in our pattern analyzer post.
Data 12,686 clean shoes, ~21,000 per pattern Next hand Banker 49.95 to 51.61% (avg 50.63%) After commission no pattern stays positive What it is for a record of the shoe and stop decisions
