After a baccarat Martingale bust, how long to recover? The chance of making it back before the next bust is 34%

A Martingale ends most cycles at +1 unit. Then a losing run goes all the way, and more than everything earned so far goes out at once. The natural next question is how long it takes to win that back. Using the 8-deck odds of Evolution live baccarat at the Stake (stake.com) casino and Player bets, we calculated the chance of recovering a collapse before the next one comes.

The 6-step Martingale

Betting 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and losing all six costs 63 units. Winning that back at +1 per cycle needs 63 successful cycles. One cycle takes 2.2 hands on average including ties, so about 139 hands.

But six losses in a row happen 1.69% of the time with ties removed, about once every 59 cycles. That is shorter than the 63 cycles needed. The chance of getting through 63 cycles in a row without a collapse is 34.1%. Two times out of three, another collapse comes before the first one is paid back.

More steps

Steps Collapse Loss Until next Chance to
        chance collapse recover
5 3.34% 31 units about 30 cycles 34.8%
6 1.69% 63 units about 59 cycles 34.1%
7 0.86% 127 units about 116 cycles 33.4%
8 0.44% 255 units about 230 cycles 32.9%

More steps make collapses rarer, but each one costs more, so the chance to recover stays almost the same and even drops slightly. In a fair game it would stay around 37%, and the disadvantage of each hand pulls it below that. How often each losing run comes is in baccarat martingale odds.

How to use these numbers

A Martingale's result is decided not by how many times it wins but by when the one collapse comes. When you plan, first check whether the bankroll left after one collapse lets you start again. To match bankroll and steps, use the baccarat martingale calculator.
