Blackjack card counting software compared with counting by hand, what actually changes (8 decks, Hi-Lo)

8-deck blackjack card counting software adds up the cards on screen with Hi-Lo values and shows the running count, true count and cards seen live, and if you switch it on it lets you size bets by the true count. It cannot predict the next card or remove the house edge, and at Infinite Blackjack, which uses an automatic shuffler, there is almost nothing to count.

Counting itself can be done in your head. So we put the same arithmetic side by side, done by a person and done by software, one task at a time, to see what changes and what stays the same.

1.Blackjack card counting software uses the same formula as a person

The rule is the same whoever counts. Hi-Lo gives +1 to 2 through 6, 0 to 7 through 9, and -1 to 10, J, Q, K and A.

True count = running count ÷ decks left. Decks left = 8 minus cards seen ÷ 52

A running count of +6 with 3 decks left is a true count of +2. By the common rule of thumb, each +1 of true count moves the player's expectation by about 0.5%, and the game tips slightly toward the player only around +2.

How one card turns into a bet size. A person and the software follow the same steps.

The difference comes from running that formula every round without a break. The six rows below are where it shows.

2.Counting by hand vs software, six rows compared

Adding the running count

At a 7-seat table, the cards for several seats and the dealer land at once each round. A person has to scan them and add each to the number in their head, and one missed card means carrying a wrong number until the shoe ends.

The software puts a +, 0 or - mark on each card as it is dealt and updates the total at once. It also leaves one log line per hand to look back on.

Counting the cards seen

To get the true count you also need the number of cards dealt so far, kept apart from the running count. For a person that means holding two numbers at the same time.

The software shows the cards seen right next to the running count.

Dividing by the decks left

Eight decks are 416 cards. For example, with 208 cards seen there are 4 decks left, and a running count of +8 at that point is a true count of +2.

A person usually estimates this division. The software redoes the division with every card and shows the true count at once.

Restarting after a shuffle

A count only means something from right after a shuffle. Sit down mid-shoe and neither a person nor the software knows the count until the next shuffle.

The software starts again from 0 on a shuffle, a restart or a table move. A person who misses the shuffle ends up carrying the old shoe's number forward.

Changing the bet

A human counter bets more when the count is high and the minimum when it is low. How much more is decided on the spot.

The software multiplies by a table set in advance. For example, with 2x entered for a true count of 2 or more, double the base bet goes out only in rounds where the true count is 2 or higher. If a max bet per round is entered, anything above it is cut.

Setting the multiplier table and the max bet is not something the software does for you. They are values a person enters before switching it on.

Hit and stand decisions

Some human counters change hit and stand decisions by the count, known as index plays.

The software used as the reference here plays the basic strategy chart (8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17) every round regardless of the count, and uses the count only for the bet size.

3.Limits that stay the same whoever counts

With 8 decks each card is diluted, so the count moves slowly. Live shoes are reshuffled well before the last card, and the cut card is commonly reported around the middle.

So high true counts are rare. The true count is above +2 in only about 10% of rounds. In the rest, the house keeps the edge however exact the count is.

The RTP is 99.29% at 7-seat tables and 99.47% at Infinite Blackjack. Infinite Blackjack uses an automatic shuffler, so the 7-seat tables are where a count can be followed.

Insurance does not change either. It breaks even only when more than 33.3% of the cards left are worth ten, and with a new 8-deck shoe and a dealer ace showing the real share is about 30.8%.

Casinos can limit players whose bets swing a lot with the count. That holds whether the counting is done by eye or by software. Whether automation tools are allowed differs by country and casino terms, so check that first.

4.Not the same thing as a counting practice app

Search for blackjack card counting software and the first results are counting practice apps from app stores. They deal cards on screen and ask you to name the running count and true count, as a training tool.

Software used at a live table reads the cards actually dealt there and counts them. A practice app builds a person's counting skill, and the live kind takes the counting off a person's hands. Neither one makes the gain from an 8-deck shoe any bigger.

The screen can keep the count, but the multiplier table and the stop line are written down by a person first.

5.Frequently asked questions

Q.Does counting with software give a better result than counting by hand?

A.It cuts down on missed or wrong counts, but the gain from an 8-deck shoe is the same. True counts above +2 still come up in only about 10% of rounds.

Q.Is card counting software any use at Infinite Blackjack?

A.Hardly. The automatic shuffler keeps the count from building up. The 7-seat tables are where a count can be followed.

Q.If I join mid-shoe, does it count right away?

A.It cannot know the cards dealt before the shuffle, so that number is not reliable. The count from the next shuffle onward is the one that means something.

Q.Does it change hit and stand when the count is high?

A.The reference software does not. Decisions are always basic strategy, and the count only sets the bet size when the multiplier table is on.

Hiddenpick is a Windows program that keeps on its server the betting rules that pick owners do not make public, and runs them as they are on the PC of the person who received them through a referral code. It currently runs on Evolution live baccarat and blackjack (21) at Stake (stake.com). How far it shows the Hi-Lo count is laid out in the blackjack card counting guide.

We are recruiting national pickster representatives, and those selected receive benefits worth $12,000, a one-year pass (apply at https://hiddenpick.my/pickster).
