Baccarat site betting time: how online rulebooks and land-based casino rules set the cutoff, compared

Three things first

  • The Evolution rulebook signals betting time only with traffic lights and gives no number of seconds
  • The Australian Capital Territory casino rules require a countdown clock at the table, the length on a sign, and notice before it changes
  • Real hand intervals ran 23 to 30 seconds in Speed rooms and 24 to 52 seconds in other rooms, so the interval alone is a poor guide to the cutoff

How many seconds does a live baccarat site give you to place chips? Most site guides cover it in a sentence or two. This post puts three documents that set the cutoff side by side in their own words, then checks real hand records to see how much that time moves.

1.Who states the seconds and who does not

Evolution says a standard baccarat round lasts 48 seconds and Speed Baccarat 27 seconds (Evolution Speed Baccarat page). The same page does not say how many of those seconds are for betting.

When Pragmatic Play launched its Speed Baccarat in 2020, it said each round takes 27 seconds and betting time is 12 seconds (CasinoBeats, 2020). That makes betting 44.4% of a round (calculation).

Betting time: the stretch in which chips can be placed, moved and taken back. After it, bets are fixed.

2.Three documents compared: who announces the cutoff, and how

Evolution rulebook: three traffic lights

The Evolution baccarat rules published by Loto-Québec say on-screen traffic lights show the state of the current round (Evolution baccarat rules). Green means you can bet, yellow means betting time is nearly over, red means it has expired.

Nowhere in the rulebook is betting time given in seconds. There is no line about giving notice before the length changes, and none about clicks that arrive after red.

The rulebook fixes three colours and nothing more.

What it does cover is bets lost through the player's own actions. If betting time remains and you have chips on the table, minimising the browser or opening another tab may be read as leaving the game, and that round's bets may be declined.

Pragmatic Play announcement: 12 seconds

Pragmatic's 12 seconds comes from its 2020 launch announcement. We could not confirm from public documents that every table still uses 12 seconds today.

ACT rules: a clock and a sign

Land-based rules are far more specific. The mini baccarat rules approved by the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission on 9 August 2024 (NI2024-456) define the wagering period like this (ACT mini baccarat rules).

  • Start: the dealer starts the countdown clock and calls "PLACE YOUR BETS"
  • End: the clock reaches zero and the dealer immediately calls "NO MORE BETS"
  • Length: shown in seconds on a sign at or near the table (the rules give 30 seconds as an example)
  • Changes: only after prior notice to players

Land-based rules make the seconds and the change notice mandatory, while the online rulebook only describes how the cutoff is shown. Handling after the cutoff differs too. The ACT rules define the wagering period as the time to place, move or retrieve a wager, so after zero none of the three is allowed.

What can and cannot be undone after the cutoff is laid out case by case in our baccarat site bet cancellation post.

3.Why hand intervals are a poor guide to the cutoff

With no seconds given, it is tempting to estimate from the interval between hands. So we took only clean shoes started between 9 September and 30 October 2026 and measured the time between consecutive hands in the same shoe. These are shoes with no missing hands and no hands bunched within 12 seconds.

The bottom 10% and top 10% points of hand intervals. 80% of intervals fall between each pair.
▲ The bottom 10% and top 10% points of hand intervals. 80% of intervals fall between each pair.

In Speed rooms, 62 tables and 65,157 shoes (4,299,477 intervals), the bottom 10% point was 23 seconds and the top 10% point 30 seconds. A spread of 7 seconds (calculation), with 80% of intervals falling between those two points.

Rooms without Speed in the name, 33 tables and 17,253 shoes (1,131,002 intervals), ran 24 and 52 seconds, a spread of 28 seconds (calculation).

Four times as wide. In rooms without Speed, 6.06% of intervals went over a minute, against 0.31% in Speed rooms.

A hand interval contains betting time, dealing and the result display. Applying Pragmatic's 44.4% to the 26-second Speed median gives about 11.6 seconds of betting, but that is an assumption.

4.Where connection delay gets in front of the cutoff

A click made just before the cutoff can be delayed on its way from your screen to the game server. The UK Gambling Commission technical standard RTS 4 says that where speed of response significantly affects the chance of winning, operators must assess that risk (UK RTS 4).

The same standard says players should be told, in game rules or help pages, that slower networks or devices may put them at a disadvantage. One example approach it gives is showing the level of delay as high, medium or low.

Yellow means the window is closing. A first chip placed on yellow can miss the round by a few seconds of delay.

A full disconnection is another matter.

The Evolution rulebook says bets already placed remain valid and are settled in your absence.

5.Three-line summary

Three-line summary

  • The Evolution rulebook signals the cutoff with three traffic lights only, and Pragmatic announced 12 seconds of betting time for Speed Baccarat
  • The ACT rules put the seconds on a sign and require notice before changes, and after zero placing, moving and retrieving all close
  • Real hand intervals ran 23 to 30 seconds in Speed rooms and 24 to 52 seconds elsewhere, so watch the light and bet while it is green
