After five baccarat losses, is a win due? The gambler's fallacy in numbers

Play baccarat for a while and you start to feel that "it has to turn now". Banker has come five times in a row, so Player must be next: that is the classic case, and it has a name, the gambler's fallacy. We checked it against the odds of Evolution live baccarat at the Stake (stake.com) casino and real shoe records.

How rare five losses are

Player loses 5 in a row (ties removed) 3.34%
Streaks per shoe 31.4 on average
Share of streaks 5 or longer about 5.6%
Streaks of 5+ per shoe about 1.8

At one in thirty, five straight losses look rare. But a shoe produces more than 30 streaks, so a streak of five or more shows up once or twice in almost every shoe. The streak counts come from 25,000 shoes collected from Evolution tables on Stake.

Why the next hand does not change

Cards have no memory. Each hand is dealt fresh from 8 decks (416 cards), and whether Player or Banker won the last hands barely changes what is left in the shoe. Even card counting, which tracks the remaining cards exactly, cannot turn Banker positive with 8 decks (our card counting post). So after five losses, the next hand is still Player 49.32% and Banker 50.68% with ties removed.

Where the feeling comes from

That a five-loss streak as a whole is rare is a different statement from the sixth hand being rare once five are already lost. The first five hands are over; what remains is always one hand. It is the same reason long streaks feel rigged (are long streaks rigged). How far prediction software can read such runs is shown in the truth about baccarat prediction software.

Summary

Gambler's fallacy belief that past results shift the next hand
Five losses 3.34% (Player, ties removed)
5+ streaks about 1.8 per shoe (25,000 shoes)
Next hand Player 49.32% · Banker 50.68%, unchanged
