Kiwoom API for automated trading, Hero Moon auto-watch orders, OpenAPI+ and the REST API compared

The comparison first

  • The no-code route is the auto-watch order in Hero Moon, and Kiwoom's own system watches the condition for up to 90 days
  • OpenAPI+ is a Windows COM module, so the PC running the program has to stay on through the session
  • The REST API arrived on March 24, 2025 and can be called from Windows, macOS or Linux with nothing to install

1.Three things behind one search

Search for a Kiwoom automated trading program and most of the top videos show how to set a condition inside Hero Moon, Kiwoom's trading app. A little further down, Python coding lessons appear.

That is because the phrase covers three routes. One is the auto-watch order built into Hero Moon. The other two are APIs that connect a program you write yourself to Kiwoom: the older OpenAPI+ and the REST API released in 2025.

API: a channel a broker opens so that other programs can call its quote and order functions.

2.The three routes side by side

Hero Moon auto-watch order

Kiwoom's help page (screen 0624) describes it as a function that places an order automatically the moment a saved watch condition is met. The order goes out without asking for another confirmation.

The order goes out even with the HTS or MTS app closed.

Kiwoom's own system does the watching.

A watch condition is valid for 90 days, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays count toward that. The limits are 50 auto-sell conditions for holdings, 50 auto-buy conditions for new stocks and 5 auto-sell conditions for newly added holdings.

Watching starts only after pressing Start Watch. Changing the account password means deleting the conditions and entering them again, and once an order goes out its condition is deleted.

OpenAPI+

Kiwoom's OpenAPI+ page presents the service as a way to link an investment strategy the customer programmed to modules Kiwoom provides. It is a Windows COM version. The development table lists C/C++, C#, Visual Basic, Excel and Delphi.

Queries are capped at 5 a second, 100 a minute and 1,000 an hour. If the service goes unused for three months, the registration lapses on the first business day of the following month.

The program runs on your own PC, so when the PC goes off the automated trading stops with it.

Many tutorials set up a separate 32-bit environment to use it from Python. That point is not on the official page, though; it comes from developer community material.

REST API

Kiwoom released its REST API on March 24, 2025 (Smart Today). With nothing extra to install, it can call trading and quote functions from Windows, macOS or Linux, and there are Python and Java examples.

The Korea Economic Daily reported that by August 18, 2025 cumulative calls had passed 500 million and cumulative users 10,000 (Korea Economic Daily). The separate live and mock trading addresses are covered in the Python stock trading bot post.

3.Which one to pick

  • One condition: a simple rule such as selling below a set price is shortest as an auto-watch order.
  • Calculations: going through many stocks and computing indicators to choose belongs to the APIs.
  • No PC left on at home: the REST API can also be called from a cloud server.
Writing the condition down first makes it easier to decide which route to move it into.

4.Before switching it on

Start with mock trading.

The OpenAPI+ page also recommends testing on mock trading before live trading, and the login window has a box to tick for mock trading.

Kiwoom's help page warns that in fast markets or when orders pile up, fills can be delayed or happen at an unwanted price. Market orders only work in the regular session, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm Korean time.

Open the fill history yourself once a day after orders start going out.

Before switching on automated trading at Kiwoom

  • Sorted out whether the rule fits one auto-watch order or needs calculation
  • For auto-watch orders, pressed Start Watch and marked the date 90 days ahead
  • For OpenAPI+, checked that the PC can stay on through the whole session
  • For an API, placed orders in mock trading first
  • Set a time once a day to look at the fill history
