How to read the baccarat derived roads: what Big Eye Boy, Small Road and Cockroach add

In the lower right of a live baccarat screen there are three more small grids of red and blue marks. These are the derived roads, sometimes called the Chinese roads. You see them on Evolution live baccarat at the Stake (stake.com) casino too. They look cryptic at first, but the idea behind them is simple.

The three roads

The first is Big Eye Boy, the second is Small Road and the third is Cockroach Pig. Big Eye Boy draws hollow circles, Small Road draws solid dots and Cockroach draws short slashes. All three are drawn by reading the big road.

Red and blue are not banker and player

This is the part that confuses most people. On a derived road, red does not mean banker. It means the new result matches the shape of an earlier column. Blue means the shape breaks. Every time a new result lands on the big road, each derived road adds one mark after making its comparison.

What gets compared

Big Eye Boy compares with the column one step back, Small Road with the column two steps back, and Cockroach with the column three steps back. When a new column starts, the road checks whether the two columns before it had the same length. Same length gives red, different gives blue. When a column keeps growing, the road checks the compared column at the same depth. If that column also reached this depth, the mark is red. If it stopped exactly one cell earlier, the mark is blue. So long chops or repeating column lengths fill the roads with red, while ragged column lengths mix in blue.

Is there anything new in them

No. The derived roads are computed only from the column lengths of the big road, so they add no fact the big road did not already show. In real shoes the big road forms 31.4 columns per shoe on average. Of those, 51.8% are one cell long and 24.8% are two cells long. Column lengths are that irregular, so the red and blue marks flip just as irregularly. They are the same results redrawn from another angle, not a window onto the next hand.
