The dealer reaches for a card, then pulls the hand back. A box saying the issue is being checked appears on screen, and the light stays red while the seconds pass. It is a pause that turns up now and then in live baccarat.
Whether that round goes on or becomes void with the stake returned is decided by a few lines in the rules. We put the question into seven checks using the game rules, the Pennsylvania baccarat regulation and English court rulings.
Void round: the result and payouts of that round are treated as if they never happened, and the stakes are returned.
Not every paused round becomes void. Some are fixed and continue, some end with a corrected result, and some are cancelled with the money returned.
The seven checks below go through the lines that separate the three.

The Evolution baccarat rules mention voiding in two places. Under the payout table, they say any malfunction voids the game round and all eventual payouts for the round, and bets are returned (Evolution baccarat rules).
The error handling section gives the order. If there is an error in the game, system or game procedure, the round is paused while the dealer notifies the service manager. Players are told through chat or an on-screen pop-up that the issue is being investigated.
If the manager fixes it right away, the round simply continues. The round is cancelled only when it cannot be fixed immediately.
In a cancelled round, the initial bets of everyone who took part are refunded. Because payouts are void too, a bet on the winning side also gets only its stake back.
The void lines in the rules say nothing separate about side bets. Check each spot you bet on in the history window.
Live studios read card values with recognition equipment and show them on screen. The Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission live dealer inspection procedures ask for a manual override that can overrule a misread result and is clear to players when used (IoM GSC procedures).
The same document asks for separate procedures for incorrect card detection, dropped cards, misdeals and aborted games, and for those events to be collected into statistics. If a card value on screen changed before the round ended, the round may have been settled on a corrected result.
The Pennsylvania baccarat regulation, 58 Pa. Code § 631a.15, lists how casino tables handle cards that come out wrongly (58 Pa. Code § 631a.15).
Of the five subsections, only the last one voids a round.
Subsection (e) says that if there are not enough cards left in the shoe to finish a round, the round is void and all wagers are returned. A new round starts after a full set of cards is put back in the shoe.
This rule applies to casino tables in Pennsylvania. Rounds from studios elsewhere follow the game rules and the standards of that studio's licensing body.
The disconnection section of the rules says placed bets remain valid and are settled in your absence. The steps after a drop are in our baccarat site disconnection post.

"A malfunction voids all pays and plays" is a common line in game rules. The English High Court ruled on it on 7 April 2021 (Green v Petfre judgment).
On 26 January 2018 an online blackjack game showed £1,722,500.24 in winning chips, and the operator refused to pay, pointing to a fault in the game. The court read an undefined "malfunction" as a detectable breakdown or interruption in service.
It also found the terms had not been brought to the player's attention well enough to form part of the contract. They failed the transparency test of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 as well, and the player won summary judgment.
The Durber case on 5 March 2025 went the same way. The screen showed a jackpot of about £1.1 million, £20,265.14 was paid, and a clause putting the server result above the screen was held to be unusual and not properly brought to the player's attention (Harris Hagan summary).
Both cases involve computer-drawn games, not live baccarat. In both, where the void line sat in the terms and how visible it was decided the outcome.

Look at the top line of the history window to see whether the round was recorded as cancelled and whether the full stake came back. A screenshot showing that round's GAME NUMBER lets support find the round straight away.
Gambling is restricted or illegal in many places, so check the law where you live. If it feels hard to control, contact a local gambling support service.
A paused round goes on if it is fixed and is void only when it cannot be, with the initial stake returned, so match the refund in the history window and read where the terms put the malfunction line before you play.
Hiddenpick is a Windows program that keeps on its server the betting rules that pick owners do not make public, and runs them as they are on the PC of the person who received them through a referral code.
