Baccarat martingale odds: how often do six losses in a row come

The question martingale players ask most is "what are the odds of six losses in a row". The math is easy. How you read the answer is what changes everything. We put the numbers next to real shoes collected from Evolution live baccarat at the Stake (stake.com) casino.

The chance of losing one hand

In eight-deck baccarat, with ties left out, banker wins 50.68% of the time and loses 49.32%. A tie returns a banker bet, so it drops out of the count. In our 8,228 clean shoes banker came out at 50.68%, the same as theory.

The chance of N losses in a row

Multiply 49.32% by itself once for each loss.

3 in a row 11.99% (about 1 in 8)
4 in a row 5.92% (about 1 in 17)
5 in a row 2.92% (about 1 in 34)
6 in a row 1.44% (about 1 in 70)
7 in a row 0.71% (about 1 in 141)
8 in a row 0.35% (about 1 in 286)

So a 6-step martingale breaks all the way within one cycle 1.44% of the time. On its own that looks small.

How many cycles fit in a shoe

The catch is the number of cycles. A shoe averages 67 hands, about 60 once ties are removed. One 6-step cycle ends after a little under two hands on average, so a shoe holds 30-odd cycles. That is like drawing a 1.44% ticket 30 times per shoe, which works out to somewhere in the 40s per 100 shoes.

What real shoes showed

Betting banker every hand: how many times the ladder broke all the way, per 100 shoes, by step count.

Betting banker every hand: how many times the ladder broke all the way, per 100 shoes, by step count.

Over 25,133 shoes with banker on every hand, 6 steps broke 39.1 times per 100 shoes, 7 steps 19.0 times and 8 steps 9.2 times. The count sits a bit under the estimate because cycles still running when a shoe ends are never finished. A 1.44% chance per cycle becomes close to 40% per shoe.

How to read the odds

"1 in 70" does not mean rare. It means you will meet it after only a few shoes a day. Each extra step halves how often the ladder breaks and doubles the money it needs. Probability does not remove the break. It only tells you roughly when to expect it.

Summary

Losing one hand 49.32% (banker, ties excluded)
Six in a row 1.44% per cycle
Cycles per shoe 30-odd
Real breaks per 100 shoes: 6 steps 39.1 · 7 steps 19.0 · 8 steps 9.2
