Crypto trading bot github: four things to check before you run the code, license, last commit, Python version and key storage

14 June 2024. That is the date of the last commit to pyupbit, the Upbit library behind the most watched Korean YouTube tutorial on Python crypto bots. As of 23 October 2026 that is 2 years and 4 months ago.

Searching crypto trading bot github brings up more repositories than anyone can read. Here are four things to check on the repository itself before typing pip install.

1.License: what you may do with the code, and what it asks in return

The license name sits in one line on the right of the repository page. Of the four repositories below, two are MIT, one is Apache-2.0 and one is GPL-3.0.

The conditions column from choosealicense.com. All four allow commercial use, modification and distribution.

MIT has one condition. The copyright notice and the permission notice must stay in every copy, and the text says the software comes with no warranty of any kind (MIT text).

Apache-2.0 adds a duty to state what you changed, includes a patent grant and excludes trademark use (Apache-2.0 summary).

GPL-3.0 is a different kind of license. If you distribute a modified version you must disclose the source and keep the same license (GPL-3.0 summary). AGPL adds one more line: offering the program over a network counts as distribution (AGPL-3.0 summary).

As long as the bot runs on your own PC, none of the four licenses asks you to publish anything. The GPL and AGPL clauses wake up the moment you sell it or run it as a web service.

2.Repository health: last commit, release, open issues and stars

Next is whether anyone still looks after the code. These values were read from the GitHub API on 23 October 2026.

  • pyupbit: 571 stars, 36 open issues, last push 14 June 2024, no GitHub release, latest PyPI version 0.2.34 (14 June 2024)
  • python-binance: 7,214 stars, 533 open issues, last push 8 June 2026, latest release v1.0.37 (8 June 2026)
  • ccxt: 44,512 stars, 711 open issues, last push 22 October 2026, latest release v4.5.89 (20 October 2026)
  • freqtrade: 55,763 stars, 28 open issues, last push 22 October 2026, latest release 2026.9 (29 September 2026)

Last commit and release

The last commit date is the last day anyone touched the code. Exchange APIs change every year, and changes made after that date are not in the library.

pyupbit has had no commit for 2 years and 4 months, and its releases and tags pages are empty (pyupbit repository data). The last PyPI upload carries the same date.

Installing cleanly and matching the exchange's current rules are two different things.

ccxt had a push two days before the check and a release three days before (ccxt repository data).

freqtrade numbers its releases by year and month, as in 2026.9 (freqtrade repository data).

Open issues

A low open issue count looks good, but the raw number misleads. GitHub's REST API counts every pull request as an issue, so the figures above include pull requests that have not been merged yet (GitHub REST docs).

So ccxt's 711 is closer to the pile of requests and pull requests on a project that wraps many exchanges in one codebase, and freqtrade's 28 says the maintainers close issues quickly.

Rather than the count, look at how many months the oldest open issue has gone unanswered. Sort the issues tab by oldest and it is right there.

Stars

Stars are roughly how many people have looked at the code.

When many people use a library, the first issue about an exchange change tends to appear sooner.

Many stars plus an old last commit can still mean the code no longer fits the exchange. Read all four signals together.
Before opening the code, read the last commit date and the license line on the repository's front page.

3.Python version: are you running on a version that is no longer supported

Every Python version has a fixed support window. In the python.org developer guide table, 3.9 reached end of life on 31 October 2025 and 3.10 on 1 October 2026 (Python version table).

▲ The python.org developer guide table. As of October 2026, 3.11 and above still get security fixes.

3.11 runs to October 2027, 3.12 to October 2028 and 3.13 to October 2029.

The repository's own requirement sits in setup.py or pyproject.toml.

  • pyupbit: python_requires >=3.6 (3.6 reached end of life in December 2021)
  • python-binance: no requirement set; classifiers list 3.5 through 3.12
  • ccxt 4.5.89: >=3.10
  • freqtrade 2026.9: the PyPI release says >=3.11, the develop branch pyproject says >=3.12

A lower bound like pyupbit's is not a promise that the code runs on a new Python. freqtrade's develop branch has already moved to 3.12.

If you are choosing a version to install now, 3.12 or 3.13 falls inside the required range of all four repositories.

4.Keys: keep the API key out of the code

Example code often has the key typed straight into a line. Push that file to GitHub and the key goes with it.

Put keys in a .env file or an environment variable and add that file name to .gitignore. Turning off the withdrawal permission on the exchange side is covered in the Binance trading bot post.

Three lines before you run downloaded code

  • Running it alone carries no condition under any of the four licenses; selling it or serving it over the web triggers GPL and AGPL source disclosure
  • Read last commit, release, open issues and stars together. pyupbit has had no commit since June 2024
  • Python 3.10 and below are out of support, and 3.12 or 3.13 fits all four repositories

Hiddenpick is a Windows program that keeps on its server the betting rules that pick owners do not make public, and runs them as they are on the PC of the person who received them through a referral code. It currently runs on Evolution live baccarat at Stake (stake.com). The rules stay on the server and only the execution sits on the PC, and the details are in the baccarat bot guide.

We are recruiting national pickster representatives, and those selected receive benefits worth $12,000, a one-year pass. Apply: https://hiddenpick.my/pickster
