Car side hustle checks in Korea, where delivering without a paid-transport rider leaves only bodily injury cover I

If you deliver parcels in your own car for a few hours and crash, will your current car insurance pay for everything? In Korea, the financial regulator's own answer is that without a rider, only bodily injury cover I is left.

Most car side hustle videos open with daily pay. This post covers only what to check before you start. We asked about deliveries, passengers, designated driving and car ads in turn, and answered with the wording of official documents.

There are no income figures here, because no official statistics back them.

1.Does my insurance stay the same when I deliver parcels?

No. Korean personal auto policies list this among the losses they do not pay.

Paid-transport exclusion: no payout for losses while the car is used or lent repeatedly for a fee.

In one insurer's personal auto policy (AXA General Insurance), the line appears under bodily injury II and property damage, own injury and own car damage (personal auto policy). It is not in the clause for bodily injury I, the compulsory part.

What is left is bodily injury cover I

Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) put this in numbers in a July 2020 press note. A crash during paid transport without the rider is covered only by bodily injury I, with a death cap of 150 million won (FSS, 22 July 2020).

Without the rider, repairs to the other car, repairs to your own car and your own medical costs are empty boxes.

Two kinds of rider

That note announced a new freight rider for passenger cars with 6 seats or fewer. The background was an estimate of more than 100,000 drivers working through platforms such as Coupang Flex and Baemin Connect.

  • Group (on-off): bought by the platform. In the 2020 note, 138 won per 10 minutes, or 178 won with own car damage. Pays only if the platform has signed up
  • Individual: bought by the driver. The rider costs about 40% of the driver's own premium, and the note's example goes from 650,000 to 910,000 won
Group type: check that your platform actually bought it. If not, the app being on brings no cover.

The Q&A in the same note has two more easy-to-miss lines. Even with the rider, damage to the parcels you carry is not paid. You can add the rider in the middle of a policy year by calling your insurer.

If you only work weekends

In September 2025 the FSS pointed out that personal policies had no period-based freight rider, so even weekend-only couriers had to buy a full year. It said it would create a rider sold by the day, with Q4 2025 as the target (FSS, 17 September 2025).

Whether your insurer already sells the day-based rider is a question for the insurer itself. Ask too whether the 2020 rates still apply.

2.What about carrying passengers for money?

Article 81 of the Passenger Transport Act bars offering a private car for paid transport. Running costs count as payment in the text, so taking fuel money alone is covered by the ban (Article 81).

The exception is sharing a passenger car at commute times: 7 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., not on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. Breaking the rule can bring up to 2 years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won under Article 90.

Insurance is a separate check. The FSS note says the rider for cars with 6 seats or fewer is for goods and pets, so crashes while carrying paying passengers are not paid. Commute-time carpools are paid under the existing policy without the rider.

3.Is designated driving unrelated to my own policy?

There is an other-car rider that lets your own policy handle a crash while you drive someone else's car. The policy above lists crashes in a car entrusted to you as a designated driver among the losses this rider does not pay.

So that rider cannot be used for a crash during designated driving. Before taking the work, it is safer to see the operator's insurance certificate.

Checking the rider before loading the car is the better order.

4.What about getting paid to put ads on my car?

Article 19(5) of the outdoor advertising decree sets what may be shown on the outside of a car you own. Only the owner's name, title, address, business name and phone number, or the owner's own trademark or symbol, within half of each side excluding windows (decree Article 19).

If someone offers money to carry their ad, first ask on what legal basis it will be shown.

The US Federal Trade Commission has warned about scams that use car-wrap jobs as bait. The pitch promises up to $700 a week, sends a cheque first, asks you to forward part of it to a decal agent, and the cheque later turns out to be fake (FTC consumer alert).

5.Summary in three lines

Before you start

  • Without a paid-transport rider, a delivery crash leaves only bodily injury I, and the group type depends on the platform
  • Carrying people for money falls under Article 81 unless it is a commute-time carpool
  • For car ads, ask for the legal basis, and never accept a cheque that comes before the work
