Gambling addiction test checklist: the 9 questions, how to read the score and 7 warning signs in your account

8 points. That is the line the UK's National Health Service (NHS) draws on its 9-question gambling self-check. A total of 8 or more means a person is likely experiencing harm from gambling.

Korea's public problem gambling agency uses the same 9 questions in its adult screening test. This gambling addiction test checklist puts both official versions, the scoring and the places to call in one page.

1.The official test has 9 questions about the past year

The Korean version is called the CPGI (Canadian Problem Gambling Index). It asks how often each experience happened in the past year.

Screening test: a short check that picks out who may need help first.

There are four answers, each with points. Never is 0, sometimes is 1, most of the time is 2 and almost always is 3. The total sits between 0 and 27.

The 9 questions that appear on both the Korean screening page and the NHS page, sorted into four groups. The exact wording is on both sites.

In short, the questions cover these points.

  • Money: betting more than one can afford to lose
  • Thrill: needing bigger stakes for the same excitement
  • Chasing: coming back another day to win back losses
  • Funding: borrowing money or selling things to gamble
  • Awareness: wondering whether there is a problem
  • Health: stress or anxiety from gambling
  • Others: being criticised about betting
  • Household: money problems for oneself or the family
  • Guilt: feeling guilty about how one gambles or what followed

Most questions are about money and feelings, and none of them asks how often a player wins.

2.Reading the score: 0, 1 to 7, and 8 or more

The NHS page explains the total in two bands. A score of 8 or higher means the person, or someone close to them, is likely experiencing gambling-related harm.

A score of 1 to 7 is not presented as safe either. The page says gambling may still be having a negative effect.

Any score above 0 is a reason to stop and take a look.

The Korean test asks for an age group, gender and nearby region before showing the result. Leaving a name and contact details for early intervention is a separate box with its own consent.

3.Seven warning signs to check in your account history

A self-check relies on memory. Deposit history and bet history are more exact than memory.

The UK Gambling Commission requires remote gambling operators to spot signs of harm in their customers, and it lists seven categories of indicators they must use at a minimum. The list is written for operators, but a player can hold their own records up to the same yardstick.

Account history checklist

  • Spend: the monthly deposit total and the number of deposits went up
  • Patterns of spend: some days have bursts of deposits, and deposit sizes keep growing
  • Time: late night sessions are frequent and sessions keep getting longer
  • Betting behaviour: stakes rise after losses, or a big bet follows a win
  • Customer contact: complaints about not winning, or asking for a bonus after losses
  • Management tools: deposit limits changed often, or set so high they mean nothing
  • Account: failed deposits, several payment methods, winnings rarely withdrawn

The guidance says this list is a minimum and not complete. Operators are expected to add their own indicators.

Checking it with numbers

On the transaction page, add up deposits month by month for the last three months. A total that keeps rising matches the spend sign.

Next comes the time of play. Look at the times recorded in the bet history and count how many rounds were played after midnight.

If the account has a deposit limit, look at its change history too. The guidance names both frequent changes and limits set so high they mean nothing as management tool signs.

Last, check the withdrawal history. Replaying the whole balance without withdrawing, even on winning days, has the same shape as the account sign in the guidance.

If two or more boxes are ticked, it is faster to talk to a helpline with those records in hand than to judge alone.

How limits work under UK rules is covered in our baccarat site limit settings post.

4.Helplines and their hours
