Open the settings window of a futures trading bot and a few fields appear that a spot bot never had. Leverage, cross or isolated, one-way or hedge. These are the fields people usually leave at the default before pressing start.
This post goes through those fields one by one using Binance's support center, its developer docs and futures public API values read on 26 October. It does not recommend any bot and says nothing about returns. API key permissions and spot order limits are covered in the Binance trading bot Q and A.
A spot bot buys and sells with the money in the account. A futures bot puts up margin and opens a position larger than that. When the bot misbehaves, losses come faster, and the account can end in liquidation.
Maintenance margin: the minimum needed to keep a position open. Falling below it can trigger liquidation.
① In margin mode, cross lets the whole futures wallet balance back every position, while isolated uses only the margin set aside for each position. Binance's guide says cross positions can have leverage raised or lowered, but in isolated mode leverage cannot be reduced on an open position (Leverage and Margin guide).
② In position mode, one-way holds a single direction per symbol and hedge holds longs and shorts separately. The developer docs say the setting applies to every symbol at once and a change is rejected while any order or position is open (errors -4067 and -4068).
Match the account to the mode the bot's manual assumes before anything else.
③ For leverage tiers, a larger position carries a higher maintenance margin rate and a lower maximum leverage. The guide's formula is notional value × maintenance margin rate − maintenance amount.
New accounts have a separate cap. Since 7 December 2025, futures accounts less than 30 days old cannot use leverage above 20x, and since 12 August 2025 futures accounts of regular users' sub-accounts are limited to 5x.
If the bot's default is above 20x, that value is not available in the first 30 days.
④ On liquidation, Binance advises reducing positions or adding margin before collateral falls below maintenance margin. In the BTCUSDT public trading rules read on 26 October, the liquidation fee rate field was 0.0125, or 1.25% (futures trading rules).
⑤ The funding interval defaults to every 8 hours at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC.
Actual settlement can run up to 15 seconds late, and only positions open at funding time pay or receive. Binance takes no fee from funding payments (funding rate FAQ).

Intervals differ by contract. Of the 811 funding info entries read on 26 October, 342 were 8 hours, 461 were 4 hours and 8 were 1 hour. BTCUSDT is 8 hours, with a rate cap and floor of ±0.3%.
Assuming a 1,000 USDT position, a 0.01% rate costs 0.1 USDT per settlement and the 0.3% cap costs 3 USDT. Three capped settlements in a day come to 9 USDT (assumption).
⑥ Order limits in the futures public rules are 2,400 request weight per minute, and 300 orders per 10 seconds or 1,200 per minute. Request weight is counted per IP and the order limit per account.
Sending more after a 429 brings a 418 and an IP ban, and repeat bans scale from 2 minutes to 3 days (futures API general info).
The minimum order value for BTCUSDT futures is 50 USDT, ten times the 5 USDT on spot. Up to 200 orders can be left open per symbol.

⑦ Check the PC clock too. A signed request stamped more than 1,000 ms ahead of server time is not processed, and the default tolerance is 5,000 ms. Keep Windows time sync on.
⑧ In demo trading, futures practice works only through the API, and the name has changed from testnet to Futures Demo Trading. Test placing, cancelling and handling a 429 there first.
Demo profit and loss differs from the real market, so it is not a benchmark.

Whether Binance futures can be used, and how gains are taxed, depends on the country of residence. In South Korea, for example, the Financial Services Commission announced on 13 October 2026 that access to 27 unregistered virtual asset operator sites would be blocked, following earlier app blocks on Google and Apple (press release).
Binance's name was not in the body of that release, and the attached list was not checked. Read local law and Binance's terms directly.
