AI trading platform checklist: 5 things to look up on Korea's two official registers before you sign up or deposit

28. That is how many virtual asset businesses had completed registration in Korea under the Specific Financial Information Act, according to the Financial Services Commission on 24 June 2026. The same document says any other business dealing in virtual assets in Korea is operating illegally.

AI trading platform sites show plenty of dashboards and return tables, but rarely where the company is registered. This post sets out, in five lines, what to look up on official registers before signing up and depositing. It does not judge any particular platform.

1.First, work out what you are handing over

Services with very different natures sit under the same AI trading label. They are checked in different places, so sort them first.

  • Signals: telling you which shares to buy or sell and when
  • Managed: running your brokerage account or money for you
  • Crypto: holding your virtual assets and trading them on the platform

The first two are checked on the Financial Supervisory Service's FINE portal. A platform that holds crypto is checked against the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) list. If a platform does both, check both.

2.On FINE, check whether it is registered or only notified

The Financial Services Commission says three things can be checked on FINE (fine.fss.or.kr), the Financial Supervisory Service's consumer information portal: whether a business is a regulated financial company, a registered investment adviser, or a properly notified quasi-investment adviser (FSC briefing).

The names sound alike, but what each may do differs. Finding the company's name in the results is not the end. Look at which category it appears under.

Quasi-investment adviser: gives general advice to the public and starts by filing a notification.

Even a notified quasi-adviser may not give paid one-to-one advice, the Commission wrote. Anyone planning to get tailored advice or hand over account management needs to confirm a registered investment adviser separately.

Channels are fixed too. Under the Capital Markets Act amendment passed by the National Assembly on 25 January 2024, paid membership stock-tip rooms on two-way online channels such as open chat rooms can be run only by registered investment advisers.

What is left for quasi-advisers is one-way channels.

  • Chat rooms: rooms where recipients cannot type
  • Push: push messages sent through an app
  • Alerts: notification messages recipients cannot reply to

Breaking this means being treated as an unregistered investment adviser and facing criminal penalties, the document says. Filing a false or fraudulent notification to enter the market carries up to 1 year in prison or a 30 million won fine.

So if the sign-up invitation came from a paid group chat where members talk back and forth, compare it with the FINE result once more. A paid two-way room run by a business that has only filed a notification matches the banned case the document describes.

On FINE, what matters is whether the business is registered or only notified, not just whether its name appears.

Match the company name on the platform's invitation against the lookup result, letter by letter.

3.If it holds your crypto, check the FIU list

If the setup is to deposit crypto on the platform and let it trade there, the place to check changes. In its 24 June 2026 document, the Financial Services Commission said 28 virtual asset businesses were registered, and the list can be checked on the FIU website, www.kofiu.go.kr (FSC user caution).

Unregistered business carries up to 5 years in prison or a 50 million won fine. According to the document, a business not on the list that deals in virtual assets in Korea is illegal in itself.

4.The law separately bans promises to cover losses

Advertising wording is something to check as well. The 2024 Commission document lists what quasi-advisers must not do in ads and business, with the penalties.

  • Loss cover: promising profits or promising to cover losses carries up to 3 years in prison or a 100 million won fine
  • False ads: wording that passes the firm off as a regulated financial company, or false or unrealised returns, carries an administrative fine of up to 100 million won

If a sign-up pitch says your principal will be kept safe or losses will be made up, put it side by side with this rule. Presenting returns that have not been realised as a track record is another example the same document gives.

The arithmetic of laying a daily return over the calendar is in our post on the AI trading bot claim of 5% a day.

5.Five lines to write down before signing up

It helps to screenshot the lookup results and keep them with the date. Even if the company name changes later, there is something to compare against.

Before putting money into an AI trading platform

  • Service type: noted whether it is signals, a managed account or crypto custody
  • FINE lookup: checked whether it is a registered adviser or a notified quasi-adviser, down to the category
  • Advice format: checked that paid one-to-one advice or a paid two-way room is not coming from a notified business
  • FIU list: if it holds crypto, confirmed it is on the registered list
  • Ad wording: checked for promises to cover losses or unrealised returns
