How to read the baccarat bead road: 3 things beginners mix up

The grid of circles in the corner of a live baccarat screen is the bead road. It is the simplest roadmap, one circle per hand, and yet at first it is hard to know where to start reading. Using Evolution live baccarat at the Stake (stake.com) casino as the reference, here are the three things beginners mix up most.

1. Read it downwards

The bead road starts in the top left cell and goes down one cell at a time. After six cells it moves to the top of the next column to the right and goes down again. Read it across like a book and the order gets scrambled. The first hand is top left, and the latest hand is wherever the cells stop in the rightmost column.

A shoe averages 67 hands, so on the bead road it fills a little over 11 columns.

2. Ties take a cell too

On the bead road a tie gets its own green circle. On the big road a tie takes no cell and is only marked on the cell before it. So the same shoe has a different number of cells on the two roads. With about 6 ties per shoe, the bead road runs roughly six cells longer than the big road. That is usually why lining the two up cell by cell does not work.

3. A row is not consecutive hands

Look at a bead road for a while and rows of the same colour stand out. Two neighbouring cells in a row are not consecutive hands. They are six hands apart. Consecutive hands sit on top of each other in a column.

We counted the banker share in each of the six rows over 25,000 collected shoes, and all six came out between 50.8% and 51.0%. No row shows more of anything. A row is a shape the grid draws, not a flow the cards make.

What it is good for

The bead road is a complete record of hand order. It is the easiest place to see how many hands have passed, how many ties there have been and how much of the shoe is left. For runs and turns, the big road is better.
