Baccarat side bets checklist, six Evolution payouts worked out on eight decks before you bet

At the bottom of a live baccarat screen, next to the big Player and Banker spots, sits a row of small spots. Numbers such as 11:1 and 25:1 are printed on them, and the settings menu can switch on a few more that are hidden by default.

The payout is easy to see. How often each spot actually hits is not shown anywhere on the screen. We took the payout table from Evolution's published baccarat rules, worked it out on an eight-deck, 416-card shoe, and wrote down what to check before betting.

1.The six side bets in the rules

The Evolution baccarat rules posted by Loto-Québec, Quebec's lottery corporation, list six side bets (Evolution baccarat rules). The game uses eight standard 52-card decks.

Side bet: a spot apart from Player, Banker and Tie that pays when its own condition appears.
  • Pairs: Player Pair and Banker Pair pay 11:1 when that side's first two cards are a pair
  • Perfect Pair: pays 25:1 when one side's first two cards match in value and suit, 200:1 when both sides do
  • Either Pair: pays 5:1 when either side has a pair
  • Bonuses: Player Bonus and Banker Bonus pay 1:1 to 30:1 when the chosen side wins on a natural or by four points or more
Payouts are from the rules. Probabilities are our own calculation over every outcome of a 416-card shoe.

2.Five things to check before betting

Check 1. Is the condition about cards or points?

A pair needs the same card. A 10 and a king are both worth zero but are not a pair. Perfect Pair also needs the same suit, so a seven of hearts and a seven of spades is a pair but not a perfect pair.

The Player Pair spot on its own is worked out in our Evolution baccarat pair bet article.

Check 2. Write the probability next to the payout

These are the hit rates we counted on eight decks.

  • Player Pair: 31/415, about 7.47%, roughly once in thirteen hands
  • Either Pair: about 14.38%, with both sides paired on 0.56% of hands
  • Perfect Pair: exactly one side 3.32%, both sides 0.0285%, about once in 3,500 hands
  • Player Bonus: wins on 28.99% of hands, returned on a natural tie 1.79%

The 200:1 spot comes up about once in 3,500 hands, so a few hundred hands a day may never show it.

Check 3. Match the RTP table to the math

The end of the rules gives a return to player (RTP) figure for each spot. Set next to the values we calculated from the payouts and the probabilities above, all six agree to two decimal places.

  • Pair: 89.64%
  • Perfect Pair: 91.95%
  • Either Pair: 86.29%
  • Player Bonus: 97.35%
  • Banker Bonus: 90.63%

An RTP of 89.64% means an average of 10.36% of each bet is lost. On the main game, banker loses 1.06% and player 1.24%.

Average share lost per bet. The 100 one-unit bets are assumed; the eight-deck math and the RTP table give the same values.

Assuming one unit on a spot 100 times, the average loss is about 1.1 units on banker, 2.7 on Player Bonus, 10.4 on a pair and 13.7 on Either Pair.

Check 4. The two bonus spots are not the same

The two bonus spots share one payout table, yet the RTP is 97.35% for Player and 90.63% for Banker.

Working it through, the chosen side wins by six points or more on 5.67% of hands for Player and 4.85% for Banker. The big 4:1 to 30:1 steps come up more often on the Player side. The side that wins the main game more often is not the side that loses less on the bonus.

Check 5. Open that table's rules tab

The figures here follow the payout table in the rules above. A spot with the same name can carry a different table at another provider or another table type, and changing one payout means redoing the math from the start.

Before a chip goes on a side spot

  • Read whether the condition looks at the card or also the suit
  • Wrote the hit probability next to the payout
  • Found the RTP table at the bottom of the rules tab
  • Counted how many times the banker's 1.06% the spot costs

3.What the on-screen history cannot tell you

According to the rules, the Bead Road marks hands with a pair using small dots. The history displays described in the rules have no mark for Perfect Pair or the bonus spots, so how often those two hit cannot be counted without reading every card.

Writing the payout and the hit rate side by side on paper is enough to count what each spot costs.

4.One-line answer

The six Evolution baccarat side bets carry RTPs of 86.29% to 97.35% that match the eight-deck math exactly, and even Player Bonus, the cheapest of them, costs more than twice what the banker bet does.
