Type evolution baccarat demo into YouTube and a row of videos called 'Gameplay Demo' comes up. Each one is a recording of rounds someone else already played. None of them lets you place a chip.

What most people searching for an Evolution baccarat demo want is a table to get the feel of the game without money on it. We checked in Evolution's own material why live tables rarely offer that, then worked out what learning on a real shoe costs.

1.A live table has only one round

Evolution's rules say live baccarat is hosted by a dealer and played with eight standard 52-card decks. When a new shoe comes in, the roads and shoe statistics are cleared (Evolution baccarat rules).

Everyone at that table sees the same cards and the same round. The rules also say bets already placed are settled even if your connection drops. There is no way to rewind a round or run a separate one for a single player.

Live table: a real dealer deals real cards, and everyone at the table gets the same result.

In this search we found no practice mode for live tables in Evolution's public material.

2.The closest thing to practice: First Person Baccarat

On 14 May 2020 Evolution announced First Person Baccarat in a press release. In this game a random number generator (RNG) sets the cards instead of a dealer (Evolution press release).

These are the features the release lists.

• Tables: 12 (six standard, six No Commission)
• Vacant tables: deal hands without a bet to build up the roads
• Cards: dealt from an eight-deck shoe, not digitally shuffled after each round
• GO LIVE button: moves to the live table with the same rules and the same screen

The release says operators can use these games to introduce new players to the casino classics. For learning the screen and the rules, this game is the closest match to a live table. The difference that remains is that an RNG sets the cards.

3.What learning on one real shoe costs

Now the case of learning straight on a live table. Assume 1,000 won on Banker every hand.

With the clean-shoe Banker share of 50.68%, a Banker bet is worth -1.15% per bet. The expected loss per hand is 11.5 won (calculated).

Across 25,133 recorded shoes the average shoe ran 67 hands. Bet through one whole shoe and the expected loss is about 771 won (calculated). That takes about 29 minutes at 26 seconds a hand in a Speed room, and about 41 minutes at 37 seconds in a room without Speed.

On that number alone it looks like a cheap lesson. The catch is that a single shoe almost never lands near that average.

Betting the same amount on Banker every hand across those 25,133 shoes, the standard deviation of one shoe's result was 7.63 bets. At 1,000 won that is 7,630 won. The swing is about 10 times the expected loss (calculated).

So the result of one shoe tells you little about the game. Win or lose, most of the difference is that shoe's swing.

Single shoes also vary in shape. In the same data, Banker took more than 60% of non-tie hands in 8.1% of shoes and less than 40% in 4.7%.

!Learn from a lopsided first shoe that a table "runs that way" and the next shoe will prove it wrong.

We also counted losing runs while betting only Banker. The longest run in a shoe averaged 5.1, a run of six or more appeared in 33.2% of shoes and eight or more in 8.8%. That is a six-loss run about once every three shoes.

Assume three shoes of learning and the expected loss is about 2,312 won, taking about 87 minutes in a Speed room (calculated). The money looks small, but most of what you see in that time is a shape made by luck.

There is also a way to learn with time instead of stakes: watch the roads without betting and get used to the flow of a round and the betting window. Questions about win rates or streaks need tens of thousands of shoes, and a few shoes will not answer them.
