Gambling refund at a baccarat site, five ways money comes back compared and the cases where it does not

The short answer

  • Money comes back from a baccarat site in five ways: a game malfunction, underage play, self-exclusion, operator insolvency and a card chargeback
  • Each one has a different payer, a different moment and a different source document
  • Bets settled as normal, money already lost and chargebacks aimed at winnings sit outside all five

Most people who search for a gambling refund do it after the money is gone. Read the rules and the regulator's documents, though, and the places where a refund is actually written down are fewer than expected.

We compared five routes using only what the game rules, UK gambling law and licence conditions, and UK Financial Ombudsman decisions on card disputes say. There are no rankings or recommendations here.

1.A refund depends on who pays it back

The five routes side by side: who returns the money, what comes back and the source document.

Three of the five are paid by the site. One is the process for sharing out what is left when a site goes under. The last sits outside the site, with the card issuer.

Refund: money a player paid in that goes back to the player's balance or payment method.

2.Five routes compared: who, when and what

Game malfunction: that round's bets

The Evolution baccarat rules say any malfunction voids the game round and all payouts for it, and the bets are returned (Evolution baccarat rules).

If an error cannot be fixed straight away, the round is cancelled and the initial bets go back to every player in it. What comes back is the stake on that round, and the player does not have to ask.

A dropped connection is not a malfunction. Placed bets stay valid and are settled in the player's absence.

Underage play: all money paid in, no prize

Section 83 of the UK Gambling Act 2005 says that once an operator becomes aware a child or young person has used its facilities, it must return the money that person paid as soon as reasonably practicable and must not give a prize (Gambling Act 2005, s.83).

Under section 45 of the same Act, a child is under 16 and a young person is 16 or 17. Section 83 overrides any contract or terms, and the operator cannot ask for back a prize paid before it knew.

On this route the money staked comes back, and the winnings do not.

Self-exclusion: the balance left in the account

UK licence condition 3.5.3 says the operator must close the accounts of a self-excluded customer and return the money left in them (Gambling Commission 3.5.3). It covers the unused balance, and bets already lost are not part of it.

Operator insolvency: as far as the protection rating in the terms

The UK Gambling Commission's four customer funds ratings, in order of how much they protect on insolvency.

What happens to a balance if the site goes under? The UK Gambling Commission sorts customer funds into four ratings: not protected (no segregation), not protected (segregation), medium and high (customer funds ratings).

The minimum for online operators is segregation, which keeps customer money in separate accounts. Even so, funds at that rating form part of the business's assets on insolvency. Medium carries no absolute promise that the money comes back, and high means an independent trust account.

Licence condition 4.2.1 says the rating must be in the terms and given in writing at the first deposit, and the customer cannot gamble until they acknowledge it (Gambling Commission 4.2.1). Where funds are not protected, the reminder comes again every six months with the amount held.

If the deposit screen never showed a funds protection rating, there is no confirmed basis for getting money back on insolvency.

Card chargeback: only when the money never arrived

A chargeback is a request to the card issuer to reverse a payment. In a September 2025 decision the UK Financial Ombudsman wrote that a chargeback is not a legal right but a commercial scheme that follows the card scheme's rules (DRN-5699829).

The Mastercard rules quoted in an April 2026 decision limit gambling chargebacks to cases where the purchased value failed to appear in the agreed account (DRN-6306844). Refund and withdrawal requests, terms or account access, winnings and losses, and later use of the funds are listed as outside it.

We could not check the Visa rules at source, so they are left out.

3.When money does not come back

Before depositing, check the funds protection paragraph in the terms alongside the payment record.

Money lost on a round that ended normally falls under none of the five routes.

A card payment made knowing it was gambling is hard to reverse by chargeback. Mastercard told the Ombudsman there are no chargeback rights for gambling transactions made knowingly (DRN-6143715).

Paying first and planning on a refund later has no basis in the game rules or the card rules.

Gambling laws differ by country, and the above follows UK licensing and the game provider's rules. If the urge to win back losses keeps coming, a local gambling support service is the place to call.

4.Five lines to check before depositing

Refund basis check

  • The game rules say a malfunction voids the round and returns the bets
  • The site checks age and identity at sign-up
  • There is a self-exclusion option and it says the balance is returned
  • The terms state a customer funds protection rating and it is shown at the first deposit
  • A card chargeback only applies when the money never reached the account
