Real money casino app, Google Play versus the App Store versus an apk from the site itself, three routes compared by platform policy

45. That is how many countries and regions Google Play names as places where a real money gambling app may be listed. South Korea is not one of them.

Search for a real money casino app and three things come back mixed together: store listings, apk files offered by the site itself, and web apps opened in a browser. They look like the same app, but they arrive through different doors, and each door has its own rules.

We compared the three routes using only the official documents from Google, Apple and Android. No site names, no rankings.

1.There are only three ways an app gets onto a phone

Android or iPhone, every install comes down to three routes. Google Play, the Apple App Store, and the route that skips both stores.

Direct distribution: an apk file from the site, or a browser page pinned to the home screen. No store review or scan.

Both stores have a clause written for gambling apps. Direct distribution sits outside it. Which route the app came through decides what checks it has been through.

2.The three routes side by side, by platform policy

The two stores set conditions for gambling apps. On the direct route there is nobody to check those conditions.

Google Play: banned by default, allowed only where a license exists

The Google Play policy says it generally prohibits apps that facilitate real money gambling and gaming. The exception is apps from licensed operators that Google has approved (Google Play policy).

The list of conditions is long. Complete the application process, hold a valid gambling license for each country or state where the app is distributed, keep under-age users out, and block access from any area the license does not cover.

Money is regulated too. The app cannot be sold as a paid app or use Google Play In-app Billing, it must be rated AO or the IARC equivalent, and the app and its listing must display responsible gambling information. No gambling ad may be shown to anyone known to be under 18.

Which countries qualify is kept on a separate page. It names 45 countries and regions, and South Korea is not among them (country allowances). Japan is open only for lotteries and public races run by governmental operators, and the United States and Nigeria only for certain states.

App Store: license, geo-restriction, and price

Apple's guideline 5.3.4 says apps offering real money gaming such as sports betting, poker, casino games or horse racing must have the necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the app is used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store. This is the version last updated on 16 October 2026 (App Review Guidelines).

The same clause bars illegal gambling aids, card counters included. The clause just before it, 5.3.3, forbids selling credit or currency for real money gaming through in-app purchase.

Apple keeps no country list. Instead, the section opens by telling developers to expect extra time during review.

Both stores share one condition: only where a license exists, restricted to that place. No license, no store app.

An apk or web app from the site: nobody checks the conditions

Android blocks the install of an app from outside Google Play unless the user has allowed it. On 8.0 and later the Install unknown apps setting grants permission per source app, and on 7.1.1 and earlier Unknown sources has to be switched on under Settings > Security (Android developer docs).

None of the conditions above apply on this route. Nobody asks about a license, an age gate or a geo-restriction. Every item a store policy filters out has to be checked by the person receiving the file, alone.

A web app has no file to install. It passes no store review either, so the address being opened is the whole check.

3.The route that is left in a country off the list

With South Korea absent from the Google Play list and Apple demanding a local license, a real money casino app cannot arrive officially through a Korean store account. What remains is an apk or a web app.

A second problem lands on top. KISA's Boho guide explains that malicious apps impersonate Chrome, the Play Store and government services.

Tapping the link alone does not infect the phone, installing the app through that link does (Boho smishing guide).

An advisory from March 2025 described malicious apps using the same icon as police apps and leaking the device name, IMEI, contacts and text messages. It also gave a rule of thumb: an international-sender tag on the text marks it as smishing (police-impersonation advisory).

From the receiving end, an apk sent by a gambling site and a smishing app look alike. Both arrive by link, and both ask for unknown-app installs to be switched on.

A file that arrived by link: check where it came from and what settings it asks for before tapping install.

4.What to check before installing

Only the items written in the Android documentation and the Boho advisories, in order.

First, the source. A store listing has been through the conditions above. A text or chat link has not.

Second, the settings it asks for. If the instructions say to switch on unknown-app installs or turn off antivirus, the file is from outside the store. Korea's communications regulator put it plainly: do not click or install links and apps of unconfirmed origin (policy briefing).

Third, the sender tag and the icon. Fourth, the permissions after install.

If it is already installed, Boho lists five steps. Remove the app and the apk in the Download folder, check carrier billing, reissue any certificates and security cards used on that phone, and warn contacts. Checks and reports go to 118 or the Boho KakaoTalk channel.

Before downloading a real money casino app

  • Is the source Google Play or the App Store, or a text or chat link?
  • Is your country among the 45 on the Google Play allowance list?
  • Does it ask you to enable unknown-app installs or turn off antivirus?
  • Does the text carry an international-sender tag?
  • Does it ask for contacts or SMS permissions after install?
  • In doubt, check with 118 or the Boho KakaoTalk channel
